I was a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York City in the 1960s. It was said you would learn all you need to know about what it is to make art if you saw a performance. When I left dance I began writing poetry and plays. In the vein of Martha, who took great risks using non-linear form, so too have my plays and poems been influenced by her risk-taking. My latest artistry is writing poetry with Ann Buxie. It’s written in a call-and-response style. The poems are about Ann’s and my connection to one another and the outside world. As Ann says, “I am fascinated by our need for one another, however we define that—as something beyond, as some purpose or meaning. When we met and began working together, I found what I needed—someone who understood me, who allowed me to be, yet challenged me to think again. That understanding connects me to Jean, yet we are free to come and go. We turn and turn, exploring what it means to be human.” jeancolonomos.weebly.com
