A few pounds thrown in the direction of a hot beverage and a delectably rich sandwich would hardly break the bank but that was not the point. Where would it end? Cinema tickets? Theatre? Opera? Sporting extravaganzas? Dining out? Purchasing top of the range products at the supermarket?

It had been a long and lifeless winter, day after day of charcoal rubbed skies and slippery pavements. As with everybody else, Wendell Warwick found these bleak wet mornings, noons, and nights terribly dreary and bothersome in regard to their solemn ugliness.
