That’s not love.
THE SCIENTIST BY ALEX DANIEL 34THPARALLEL MAGAZINE ISSUE 10
what do you mean you think you love me?
love
that’s just something that happens in our brains
a swirling mixture of chemicals and electrodes
a balancing act
when you met me
when you were trying your best to be cute
laughing at every joke i made
the way you bit your bottom lip
that was Epinephrine.
outside
in the freezing cold
your breath was leaving its own evidence behind in the air
your heart racing through your jacket
it was just Adrenaline.
when our lips met
and you opened your eyes to watch me
and you wished never for the night to end
those were Endorphins.
when our bodies gently collided
between linen sheets
and you whispered in my ear
“nothing will ever be the same”
that was only Serotonin.
that’s not love
that’s just science
and i’m just a scientist
