Some writers confuse shock value for originality. I’ll publish a story that pushes the envelope but not if it’s only for the sake of pushing the envelope.
I really enjoy fresh voices. There is nothing that turns me off to a piece more than clichés. If cliché characters, situations, or dialogue start piling up I get frustrated and wonder why the writer didn’t spend more time being original.
