Sink into your mat like it’s quicksand.
Natalie stifled a chortle. Here was this tranquil voice telling her to let her body sink into quicksand, being swallowed alive, without a fight. She tried to picture the mat as quicksand, containing her and forcing her body into complete immobility, but it seemed ludicrous. It was a mat, inside a room, inside a gym.

Motivational speakers, as a rule, have very little effect on the minds of intelligent people. Natalie had always believed herself to be an intelligent person and so, she felt certain, would have found Dr Goodman’s speech amusingly pointless under normal circumstances. But, these were not normal circumstances and on this particular summer day Natalie was in desperate need of something and Dr Goodman’s speech would do.
