What she really wanted was an alternate universe where mom and dad congratulated her and told her how great she would do in this next chapter in her life, in college. They would celebrate her. They would remind her that “this is not the end”, that things were going to get better yet. She would run down the stairs every morning to a sun-speckled kitchen and open a fridge door covered in memorabilia from successful years gone by.
