The Sunday bluegrass festival is fab. Tons of talent, four stages.

People are mostly here by bus. They are free buses primarily for workers. People who live as far out as Fairplay can ride the free bus to get to their job. Vangie, a Filipino girl, says her commute is 90 minutes from Leadville. The houses are cheaper in Leadville.

“It’s nice to see our taxes working, you know, providing these free buses for the workers, and tourists, connecting to all the resort places. I don’t understand the pushback, how that Muslim mayoral candidate is proposing free buses in New York City. If you can make it work here, why not make it work there?” Buddy says.

Buddy and Tim are a gay couple who lived in NYC for 40 years and have retired to this Colorado mountain town.

“Surprising how empty the parking lot is,” says Tim.

Buddy says, “I dunno. This parking lot was full last Sunday.”

The silence is pierced by a car alarm. On the driver’s side of the car is a smashed-in window. A guy is standing there. He looks in, then walks away.

Buddy says, “I’d better call 911. No-one else seems to be reporting it.” A tall black guy is waiting at the bus stop. “He’s not phoning it in, I should call.” Buddy says.
